Sewa Bharti, J&K is a registered organization dedicated to the cause and ideology of creating a castless society where in all are equal and responsible members of the society. “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinam Sarve Santo Niranmaya”, which means “May all beings be prosperous, May prosperit be all around”, a universal prayer for well beings of all, irrespective of caste, creed, colour, ethinic and geographical backgrounds is the strength which leys the organization working effectively.

Education Sector:
Sewa Bharti J&K has realized that even after sixty one years of independence, a large percentage of population is deprived of academic education. A large number of children drop out before they reach 8th Class. Boys and girls are forced to earn for their livelihood before they are 10 yrs old. Lack of Education among parents, economic poverty running in families for ages etc., are the root causes of all this.

To mitigate these social inequalities, Sewa Bharti has opened.

a) Balwan Kendra for tiny tots

b) Bal Sanskar Kendras for children from 6 yrs- 18 yrs, where besides, guidance in academic course (by giving tuitions after School hours), children are acquainted with the Sanskars by imparting them knowledge about our country, our national and religious festivals, our culture and heritage, our history through debates on social topics, cultural shows and such like activities.

Ekal Vidalyas: Sewa Bharti has opened Ekal Vidalyas (Single Teacher School) where local youths teach children of their localities. This way employment is afforded to the unemployed youth and their own kiths and kins also get benefit. The teacher of the school impart education to the local people about the beneficary scheme run by Govt. At present there are 241 such Ekal Vidalyas running in J&K State.

Adult Eduction programmes
A home is a heaven if the mother is educated. In our Adult Education centers education is imparted to those adult women who for some reasons were unable to study during early years of their life.

Achievements
We have 103 such centers in Jammu, Srinagar and Leh.

Health sector:-
Health is probably the main target of modern life style.Irregular food habits,in take of junk and canned foods and beverages, unnecessary and damaging inter- ference in our food habits and life style by advertisement of vested and influential parties through print and visual media, has taken the toll of our health. Prohibitive medical treatment and unaffordable medicines have added to this problem. Realizing the importance of awareness Progra- mmes in this Sector, Sewa Bharti J&K has been holding health Awareness Camps/ free medical camps/ Health inspection of children in remote areas in J&K and distributing free medicines to needy patients. Health Examination of children in schools is also being conducted Medical camp in Slum Area to ensure detection of any disease in children to enable its early and timely treatment.

Dispensaries

Two allopathic dispensaries - one each at Katra and Sewa Bharti, Ved Mandir are functioning to
enable poor patient’s free primary medical aid.

Neurotherapy:-

Neurotheraphy camp at Disha Boys Hostel Katra
In addition Two Neuropathy centers, where a diseases is treated without medicines, are functioning One Each at Tallab Tillo and Karan Nagar Jammu.

Ambulances:-
There are two ambulances to carry patients and their dependents within city or outside the state at bare minimum charges (To cater to cost of petrol and wear and tear.)Provisions for carrying dead bodies along with their dependents at odd hours within or outside the city or outside the State also exist.

May I help you:-
For sometime it was noticed that patients from for flung areas, referred to, for treatment at
GMC Hospital Jammu, loose precious time owing to their non-acquaintance with the hospital
or relevant doctors.Sewa Bharti as such has started a “May I help you” counter at OPD Casuality /Emergency, where voluntary services are available. Our Volunteers guide them to the proper doctor.

In addition to guidance and care rendered to the patients, blankets and cloth bags(since polythene bags are banned in side the hospital) are provided free on “to be returned basis” to the
attendants of the patients.

Blood Donation Camps:-

Blood is one of gift of god which is manufactured in body itself and no where else. There is need of blood for patients in emergency and causality and those undergoing surgeries. Awakened to the reality, we hold blood donation camps regularly where our youths donate blood voluntarily. The blood bank authorities of Govt. hospital are well acquainted with our work which is being carried under their supervision

Self reliance (Swalamban):-
Education means overall development which besides beings helpful to an individual should be beneficial to the society and country and finally to mankind. Academic education alone does not make a person self dependent. It is essential to expose the youth to such schemes and programes, as make him/her self reliant, and enable him/her to be economically self dependent. With this motive Sewa Bharti J&K runs the following self reliance programmes.

Computer Software Application courses (CSAC):-
There are six centers spread over (one each at Srinagar, Leh, Ramban, Katra and two at Jammu),where children are exposed to computer software application courses. The courses taught are equivalent to the courses taught in Govt. run polytechnique colleges. Our student have found placement in various Organizations.

Stitching Cutting and embroidery etc.
centers For such girls and women who come form economically poor backgrounds or who for some reasons could not prosecute their studies, we run Stitching and Embroidery centers, painting centers. These courses are also contem-
porary to such courses run by Govt.Polytechnical colleges.

1 Earn their lively hood,
2 Best utilization of their spare time, and
3 Enhancing their Skills

Counseling for youth
Youth Power is the most potent power and a valuable possession of a nation. To tame this power and channelise it for the development of the country is the responsibility of the elders. as well as the nation /Country.Debates/Discussins are hold and the latent leadership qualities of the participants are Counseling for youth explored. The participants are also acquainted
with the rich past of this great country of which we all need to the pround Counseling Classes are
Compulsory for all.

Social
To live in a Society and to be unaware or unmindful of the evils which are eroding its foundations is perhaps the greatest sin. It is our endeavor to awaken our youth and our children toward these evils and inbibe in them such qualities as make them able to work for abolishment of all these evils. It is our way of making the society free from such evils .In this direction, we through “Nuked Nataks”’ by children from our Bal Sanskar Kendras; draw the attention of public towards th social evils like dowry, drug addition, drinking and pollution”.

Environment
Realizing the dangers, our good earth is fraught with owing to pollution, we undertake Plantation
drives in which the children are the main participants. It besides fulfitting the purpose of plantation, settles down the feeling of responsibility towards environment in the impregnable minds.About 1600 plants have been planted within last two years and also ensured their protection.

Social functions
Religious and national festivals are the occasion which a society should clebrate together. We
Celebrate these function in the zeal and fervor along with the Children from slums and backward
areas. It helps us many ways, it brings smile on their faces (which are usually absent), it brings peace to our ears and it helps built a society where brother hood and equality is the main

As our society is advancing our youth is getting affected adversely due to the invasion of western culture and an onslaught of vulgar and erotic body exhibition by foreign media resulting in abandoning our social values, thereby giving rise to the number of newly born abandoned babies. To save the innocent lives and to give them home with a motherly affection, Sewa Bharti Chandigarh has started "Satya Parkash Matrichhaya" at Chandigarh as its very important project. The main purpose of this "Home" is to provide affectionate "parents" to the unfortunate kids, and beautiful kids to the "parents" longing to feel the warmth and softness of newly born baby.

In addition to this, left over kids will be provided with a good education, food, clothes and medical care. The emphasis is to make them an Indian citizen in real sense by inducing (inculcating) the sense of our "Oldage Sanskars", there by making them a staunch patriot who would live for the country and would scarify his or her lot for the Nation.

Pure magic and a dash of realism in Basanti's Stories: Sewabharati

    $

    0
She is a gifted storyteller who doesn't have any formal education. Born into a poor Kondh family in Jharipani village of Kandhamal district in Odisha, it was her grandmother, who ignited her imagination by narrating to her tales about the thrilling world of magical birds, stunning flowers and terrible demons. Ever since that time, it is these fantastical creatures that have enabled her to face tough times and get over the disappointments of a deprived life.

Meet Basanti Majhi, the author of a rare collection of stories penned in Kui, the language of a quarter of a million tribal people in Odisha. 'Kutia Kondh Lok Kahani' is her way of introducing a new generation of Kondh children to their native traditions and folklore, which until now had been passed down over the generations only through the oral tradition.

Majhi can dream up a wonderful imaginary world in a trifle. With the settings invariably being the jungle - she calls herself "a child of the greens" - her characters are entrenched in the tribal culture and are often seen overcoming the difficulties of contemporary times. She has a distinct style and, yes, lots of experience to tap into. Says the writer, who speaks in a dialect that most mainstream people cannot follow, "In my stories, I weave together reflections of my own life, the grief and pain of my people and the world in which I live. With that I throw in some demons, ghosts or rich landlords, to make the plot more interesting. For me, stories have always been a way to deal with hardship."

Truly, her life has not been easy. As a child she used to accompany her parents and three siblings to work in the local paddy fields from dawn till dusk. Bone tired as they made their way back home in the dark, the women would start thinking about how they are to put together the evening meal. They did not have a moment's rest. "That was our way of life. It began and ended with backbreaking hard work. But, at the same time, every day after we retired to sleep, my grandmother would tell us stories. It was the best time for me," recalls Majhi, whose grandfather had three wives. It was her second grandmother who had an endless supply of fun tales - where a bird could marry a beautiful girl or a creeper could bear a child!

Today, Majhi has followed in her grandmother's footsteps, the only difference being that she uses the metaphorical style to reveal some of the harsh realities faced by the tribal community. In fact, issues such as drought, hunger, poverty, and child marriage have been presented in all their stark detail. Here's how she tells the story of a childless young woman and the treatment that is meted out to her by society:

His name was Golden Ring. He was a blessing from her brother. Ani was married into a family in a distant village. After all her family members passed away she had no one to turn to. Friendless, lonely and poor, she was leading a meaningless life. Then one day Ani's brother came visiting and saw her anguish. Moved by his sister's plight, he gave her a golden ring. She held it in her hand but it slipped away. She put the precious ring in an iron box but it disintegrated. Finally, she swallowed it to keep it secure. Three days later, she gave birth to a baby boy. He was her life.

Majhi understands the pain of losing family members. Married at 18, her husband passed away after an unidentified illness by the time she turned 20. She has been alone ever since. The few days of her romantic rendezvous are still vivid in her mind, "I had never thought of marriage as a regular affair. I imagined my bridegroom to be a character from one of my grandmother's stories. He could be a fruit, a flower, even a python! Of course, nothing like that happened. I met my husband at a community gathering arranged by Seva Bharti, a local NGO. From the time he first saw me, he wanted to take me for his bride but I did not consent to it. After two years of hide and seek, he succeeded in expressing his love to me and I gave in to his wishes. But, I guess, Mother Earth had something else in mind. She wished to take him back."

After he was gone, she joined Seva Bharti's office at Mundigarh village to work as a housekeeper. To overcome her grief she took to writing with a vengeance. Throughout the day, she diligently went about her chores, washing utensils or drawing water from the well, yet her mind would always be busy weaving stories. Come evening and she would start putting down her ideas on paper in her native language. Whatever she wrote she put away in an old tin box.

Majhi's life took a sudden turn when eminent folklorist and historian, Raghunath Rath, came to Seva Bharti to interact with local volunteers. As he was speaking to them he saw the young woman furiously writing away in one corner. He had earlier seen her quietly go about her work and largely keep to herself. It intrigued him. So, he inquired about her from Pramod Patnaik, the head of the NGO. Patnaik smiled and told him about Majhi's passion for penning stories. When he asked if she would be willing to show him some of her work, out came the rusty tin box revealing a treasure of no less than 39 fascinating tales. Now Rath was convinced that such a unique, vibrant collection had to be shared with the larger world. So, he took the initiative to translate each story into Oriya, even as Seva decided to chip in by publishing it as a bilingual book.

'Kutia Kondh Lok Kahani' has indeed made history - it is for the first time that a Kondh has provided a glimpse into the mind of a tribal girl, her lifestyle, her aspirations and imagination. At the same time, it was also a completely unexplored genre in Oriya literature.

Reflecting the deep understanding and respect that tribal people have for the forest and the animals, the book also had shades of Rudyard Kipling's 'The Jungle Book'. Sample this story, entitled 'The Vulture':

One day, the king and queen decided to take a walk to the nearest market. On the way, the queen, who was pregnant, started having birth pains and soon gave birth to a still born. Disappointed, they left the lifeless child right there and went away. A few minutes later, however, the baby suddenly started to cry. A vulture sitting atop a tree nearby saw the baby and took him. The bird took care of the baby, nourishing him like his own. As the boy grew up the vulture even sent him to school. …

Majhi's storytelling has an inherent innocence about it, supported by incredible imagination and just a little dash of the everyday. She is happy to see her work in print but that wasn't her aim. As she puts it, "It was a good experience to see my stories in the form of a book. My stories are the unspoken part of our lives. I write about my journey without thinking much of the destination."

Seva Bharati Delhi brings sunrise in the Slums of Delhi

About thirty-five years ago, labourers from the adjoining industries erected slums near Dishad garden metro in East Delhi on deserted land. Very soon, five acre land was entirely occupied by 6,000 slums from which a majority of labourers are from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The labourers live there in an unhygienic condition. As the day begins, these labourers leave the locality in search of work and their children play near gutters. They don’t even know what education means! In their life, there has been no sunrise at all.
But, one day, in their life, sun really arose. In 1994, Seva Bharati centre was opened here. Now all the children don’t roam around the gutter but they read books at the schools. Now they know how to lead a good life and how to talk in the society. Now they have a thirst for higher education. People in the colony have set aside their quarrels and now they celebrate occasions such as Independence Day, Republic Day, Janmashtami, Makarsankranti with fervour. Youths were imparted employment-based training. Seva Bharati karyakartas have played an active part in every part of their life.
Seva Bharti karyakartas motivated me to study. They taught me to respect elders and parents and also kept me away from bad habits, one of the student studying in class IX said.
Due to Seva Bharati efforts, almost all problems in the colony came to an end. People have developed a sense of unity and brotherhood. Parents are busy at their work. In such a situation, Seva Bharti is doing a great job by imparting values to children. People here have a great respect for Seva Bharati, informed one of the resident.
Seva Bharati imparts employment-oriented training in various subjects. Primary schools are also run and after that, children are sent to different schools. Since 1994, thousands of children are motivated for education. Due to this, new generation has now become independent. Seva Bharati has really proved a boon for them.

It was 11th December 2013, a Thursday morning 4.30AM and normally a quite platform number 11 of the Chennai Central railway station was buzz with activity of a peculiar type. At one end there was decorated stand with banners while the other end a group of young volunteers were receiving children of different kind. While at other places lots of packets were getting unloaded. In the center more than 1000 children were sitting quietly in the platform along with their guides.

The train arrived at 5AM. It was a train with a difference. There were special stickers put up and some volunteers were affixing some more. On getting the clearance from them the children started moving to the compartments as they knew in advance where they have to go. And here was a great surprise. These were blind, deaf and dumb, physically challenged and small children from Chennai, Salem, Namakkal, Cuddalore, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram and had come for the special darshan of Lord Balaji by a special chartered train organized by Friends of Tribals Society (FTS) Chennai. FTS Chennai had involved local organizations like RAJAT, RYA Metro and RYA Metrostar to execute the logistics of safe handling of this mammoth activity. At 5.30AM sharp the social welfare and mid day nutritious meals minister of Government of Tamilnadu Smt Valarmati arrived and was pleasantly surprised to see the magnitude of the arrangement. She met the children, organizers and wished them success. She also flagged off the train along with Sri krishnan, GM, IOB at 6AM.
After the train moved from the platform, the compartment coordinators took over the charge to take care of the children and ensured everyone got a proper seat, breakfast, water bottles, snacks and biscuits.

In some compartments Antakshari was going on. In some tattoo or mehendi or astrologers were interacting with children. The media students of MOP Vaishanv college for women, Chennai were interacting with children and taking their photographs and interviews.

At 10.15AM the train reached Renungunta railway station where volunteers were waiting to receive them with 35 buses to carry them to Tirumala. As every child has been briefed which bus to board the group shifted smoothly to buses and reached Tirumala at around 11.45AM. After assembling at Tirumala all proceeded for Annaprasadam and assembled near main gate of the temple where special permission was accorded to the group for Darshan of Lord Balaji.

The whole Tirupati Temple was filled with children wearing YELLOW SHIRTS AND VOLUNTEERS WEARING WHITE Tshirts and having an exclusive Darshan of Lord and received HIS blessings.

After the Darshan while a group was busy arranging Laddus the other was arranging the boarding buses for return journey. The buses started for their return journey to Renungunta where the chartered train was waiting for the journey back home.

The group sat in their allotted places, took freshly cooked food, shared experiences and received the return gifts during the return journey. The train reached Chennai around 11.30PM with all safe and all blessed. Many of the group went home the same day, around 200 stayed back and went to their destination the next day. The arrangement for their night stay was also organized for this purpose.

This whole exercise was done as a part of public awareness activity relating to the silver jubilee celebrations of FTS. This unique activity was the brainchild of the Project Coordinator Sri Ravikant Choudhry. This not only resulted in awareness of the FTS and its activities during this silver jubilee year but also generated funds to run nearly 400 EKAL Vidyalayas!

On 15th of December the Sunday, a thanks giving program “Miracle on wheels” was organized to thank the sponsors, volunteers and donors of FTS Chennai by showing the famous program of Ability Unlimited, Delhi on wheel chairs.

Mangalore: The launching of 'Navachetana Vikasa Kendra, a communication development centre, a first of its kind centre in Dakshina Kannada, in association with Com Deall Unit, Bangalore, catering to the needs of Autism patients took place on Saturday, March 22 at V.T. Road, Mangalore. Navachethana aims in offering Early Intervention (EI) service for children with Communication Disorders such as ASD in DK, so families do not have travel to other cities, spending considerable time and money in search of quality services.
Dr Shenoy thanked the donors and well-wishers, especially Canara Bank for their unstinted support and encouragement to the centre. The formal function was inaugurated by lighting of the traditional lamp by Chief guest Shetty, along with guest of honor-Prof. Ramila Shekar-Professor ar Roshini Nilaya School of Social Work, Dr U V Shenoy and Tintu Mary Babu- Speech Language Pathologist at the Centre.

Tintu Mary giving a brief description on Autism Spectrum Disorder said, " Although autism is a lifelong condition, the symptoms can vary over time. The symptoms and its severity vary with each child. Diagnosis of Autism is greatly based on skills, observed behavior, educational and psychological testing, not yet on medical grounds. We need to spread the word and bring awareness about ASD and EI in the community, and also identify children at risk for ASD and refer for EI. Also inform people about Navachetana's work and support families with financial needs".

Prof. Ramila Shekar speaking said, "We need to help children with ASD to lead a normal life. This is the time for us to come forward and address issues pertaining to ASD and help those who are affected to overcome their problems and help them lead a happy life. Let's not confine the issues of ASD just within the compound of the Centre, instead spread the word and bring awareness of ASD in public".
Chief guest Shetty speaking during the occasion said that Canara Bank is very happy to be associated with Seva Bharathi, and will continue to support their projects in the future too. Public also should support and contribute financially towards the good programs and projects that Navachetana undertakes, he urged.
Four energetic and dedicated staff namely Tintu Mary Babu- Speech Language Pathologist, K Raghava Priya- Physiotherapist, Sumana  Baliga and Theertha Kumari, both as Special Educators, will be at helm at various tasks to be performed in taking care of ASD persons at the new " Navachetana Vikasa Kendra".

    Dreams Fulfilled

Prashanth from Mysore who secured the 255th rank in IIT-JEE says that if he was not selected by Tapas, his dream of getting into the IIT would never have fulfilled. “My father is a construction worker and that is the only source of income for my family. Both my elder brother and sister are studying too” says Prashanth. It was due to the encouragement of the principal and good coaching by the teachers which enabled him to crack the IIT-JEE, he says. He wishes to continue his post-graduate studies in IIT itself.

Raghavendra Valmiki who got a good rank of 1007 in the ITT-JEE, hails from Koppal. His father and mother are both employed at the Khadi and Village Industries Commission. “It was the discipline followed at Tapas, adhering to schedules and well planned lifestyle that enabled me to achieve this”, he says. If it was not for Tapas which recognized him and encouraged him to study, it would not have been possible for someone like him who is from a very humble background to even attempt ITT-JEE stresses Raghavendra.

“Reaching the unreached and bringing them to main stream is the key objective of Tapas. We are humbled to see all 34 students of batch one will get into prestigious institutes and come out as great engineers who will uplift their family and transform the society they are part of. At Tapas we focus on building character along with sharpening their skills for entering IITs,” said Dinesh Hegde, General Secretary, Rashtrotthana Parishat. Dr HS Nagaraja, Founder Director of BASE, said, “This is a unique initiative by Rashtrotthana and BASE to provide free training to the deserving students who have excelled well in their studies. There are lots of students in the weaker sections of the society from rural areas who are really outstanding in their field of studies and are waiting for the right training to help them reach their aspirations.”

In our country many brothers and sisters of our society are living below the poverty line. Lakhs of people are working in tea gardens in Assam, Tripura and Bengal, unfortunately still they are struggling hard to earn for daily bread. Many youths have dream to get married but due to poverty they could not afford such ceremonial rituals. So, many of them prefer to use short cut of Gandharva Vivah. But society does not give social status to such couples. Kalyan Ashram came forward to help such couples through Samuhik Vivah  (Group Marriage). From last one decade Ashram has been conducting such marriages in Bengal and Assam, which gives the couple social status. Urban units of organization afford all the expenses and offer gifts to the couples.
On 25th May, Samuhik Vivah  (Group Marriage) was conducted at Salibari near Siliguri of North Bengal  where 101 couples got married. All the couples came along with their relatives and villagers with great enthusiasm.  They wore traditional dresses. All the rituals were conducted with complete sanctity. After rituals couples visited temple and had blessings. All these couples got social status and honour. Everybody was happy and enjoyed delicious dinner. Such functions strengthen social fabric and accelerate the process of social harmony. Such programme was also organised at Guwahati, Assam where 19 couples got married.
