25 years of Peoples participation, unity & Integration : Seva Bharati Orissa

It was during 1985 & the same day Republic day & Saraswati Puja was celebrated. People of Mundigarh & its’ near by villages starts analysing their problems. From deeper introspection illiteracy & health identified as their social problem. What is the way out? Strongly everybody articulated to fight against these problems. Followed by a movement starts through association. “Seva” term came from Health & Bharati from the other name of Maa Saraswati, the symbolic goddess of education. Thus people named the organisation as Seva Bharati.

Education centre starts from that day onwards. Educator started off imparting education. Each family contributed 10 rupees & formed a community fund. 10 common diseases Identified & medicines procured for the remedy at the rate of 700 only. In an outer corner near to village graveyard there was a VLW quarter which was restructured & foundation stone lay in the name of Seva Bharati.

Analysis again started in the common village meetings regarding their social problems & a elongated list prepared where Hunger, Alcoholism, landlord, exploitation, corruption, fear, lack of self confidence, blind believe, unemployment, unfair Govt. process, degradation of forest, soil erosion, Sanctuary, Caste feeling and religious disparity were taken the frontage. To face these types of problems 4 strategies were fixed i.e. Rapport, Organization, Struggle & Service.

Relationship created from the village level to worldwide. Seva bharati has set aside the foot prints in the village committees, district level voluntary organizations federation, state level networks, national level associations & international level consortiums & world social forum. Struggle initiated taking human rights so that to live with the minimum basic needs. Tussle has become stronger. At every village, Committees are organised. At village level, taking 5 villages “Mutha” formed. Taking Panchayats, “Paata” formed. And in central level Organization tackle with all. Few like minded people’s networks were also created. Leaders were taken the responsibility of social war. Representatives were selected from the Panchayat to Parliament.

Then started various institutions & organizations like: Maa Bhairabi High School, Netaji Subash Ch Bosh College, Dharmaraj Primary Health Centre, Hundreds of Self Help Groups, Dhanwantary and Antaranga: a youth federation. All these are now in a row of village development. Focussing on education & health these cadres are also undertaking other aspects of community development after a great deal of analysis. Apart from these we are aiming towards the revival of village and cottage industries. Many an alternatives like Ama Gaon Khabar(a monthly wall magazine), Soap making, Khajur Jaggery preparation, Siali leaf stitching, traditional farm practice and indigenous seeds preservation have already been implemented for the socio-economic upliftment. We are making an effort to maintain unity & integrity through people’s participation but the vested environment & circumstance shatters. Like this years after years spent. After 25 years today it stands on 26th. Development paradigm has changed. Oppose is going on but the opponents are seems like gigantic. Earlier it was with village landlord but now it is with world lord. Now the fight for right is not with Government but with Globalisation. Not with Land, water, air and natural resources but with climatic change. All contenders are united. The “self scented-Haves” group of people challenging others. A regular attempt is going on to break the social bondage especially of associations & haves not and for us the signs are caste, groups, regionalism, religion & linguistic conflicts.
Very last seed has turned out to be a great tree today. During past years many a passerby has taken rest under its shed. Different people have filled their stomach in form of food by taking its fruit. It is difficult to reckon that large numbers of birds have taken rests in its branch. Some has taken its seed & replanted a new set where that has fully fledged. In future course of time by appropriately utilising human as well as natural resources, we are aiming towards creating of a pro-people oriented, human value concerned, healthy & a hunger free society.

I salute them from the core of heart, taking whose contributions we go ahead.

After the completion of first phase of relief work in Uttarakhand, Sewa International Bharat, carried out an intensive survey in the affected villages and realized that there are good number of educated and degree-holder youths living in these villages of Uttarakhand. But most of them are not utilizing their education and unable to play any role in the upliftment of their family and society. They are lacking in computer skills, confidence, presentation etc. Considering this, it was decided  to develop their personality by adding some value  and making them more useful for the family and society. Sewa International and its team had been involved in relief activities since June 2013. Shri Manver Singh Rawat, a local social worker has been appointed by SIB as a full-timer to build up better relations with people for successful run of rehabilitation projects.
keeping this  in mind, a computer training center named “Sewa Path” was inaugurated in the main market of Ukhimath, Rudraprayag district on Makar Sankranti day, 14th January 2014. Hawan was performed in the presence of local peoples. As chief guest, Shri Manwar Singh Pawar, (Principal, Inter College, Ukhimath) inaugurated the center and explained its utility to the audience. Shri Devendra Padiyar, an active local social worker was also present on the occasion and addressed the youth.
So far, five computers have been installed in the center. A well qualified and experienced computer teacher, Kavita Rana is appointed to guide students. Presently, 23 students are enrolled at the center. More students are still approching to join the center. The target is to start 4 batches per day till the end of this month.
To attract more and more interested youths, a very nominal fee Rs.50/- per month is charged which is almost one fifth of normal rates. For an easy start, basic courses like Basic, MS office, internet and typing are being taught at the center. In the future, the professional courses like Photoshop, Corel Draw, Pagemaker, Tally etc will be added in the course to make them more competent for jobs. The certificate will be awarded to the students in the end of the course after examinations. SIB has engaged local computer suppliers, furniture-makers, electricians etc. in the establishment of center to provide them more opportunity for business and earnings.
Sewa International Bharat is also planning to start two more computer centers in other blocks of Rudraprayag district by  the end of March.

“SEWA is the supreme duty of a man. Majority of the people live for their individual needs, but those who are sensitive live for others too. Sewa is the manifestation of God,” said RSS Akhil Bharatiya Sah Sewa Pramukh Shri Ajit Mahapatra. He was speaking at Bihar Prant’s first Sewa Sangam organised at Shakha Maidan of Patna on February 2. Around 300 sewa organisations of Bihar attended the Sewa Sangam.
Speaking at the inaugural session, Rashtriya Sewa Bharati (RSB) joint secretary Shri Gurusharan Prasad said an atmosphere of untrust is generating all over the country and the sewa sector too is not untouched from it. There are about 50,000 registered sewa organisations and most of them are rendering valuable services. There is a dire need to strengthen coordination among them so that they can work more effectively.
Kshetra Pracharak Shri Swant Ranjan said sewa cannot be a business. He said the blind alley of the western model has led to many misconceptions. Representatives of many service organisations including Shri Ashok Priyamvad from Vikas Bharati Siwan, Smt Jyoti from Jyoti Kalyan Kendra, Shri Sudama from Gram Vikas Manch, etc also shared their experiences. Uttar Poorva Kshetra Sanghachalak Shri Siddhinath, RSB organising secretary Shri Sunderlakshman, Smt Rama Popali of the RSB also spoke on the occasion

Rehabilitation project in Uttarakhand was launched on the auspicious occasion of Sankranti festival on 14th Jan 2014 by inaugurating the Computer training class at Ukhimath, Rudraprayag district.  This activity is sort of a prelude to the project of “empowering community to organize and manage sustainable entrepreneurship models through agriculture”. The computer training centre, as expected, is attracting good number of youth from various surrounding villages and these contacts are being developed to reach out to some of the neighbouring villages.   This centre has been sponsored by Sewa USA.
The activity in the first fortnight after the inauguration has been a bit slow because of the climatic conditions, being extreme cold on one hand while on the other it rained occasionally, retarding the pace of activity.
However, the initial preparatory activity is proceeding and the project team of SI is mapping out the areas and villages that are in bad need of empowerment through agriculture. Following are the villages which have been listed and are being contacted-

Agastyamuni Block-
  1. Raydi
  2. Falai
  3. Silli
  4. Chaka
  5. Haat
  6. Arkhund
  7. Bhatwari
Ukhimath Block-
  1. Udaipur
  2. Ransi
  3. Pathali
  4. Mukku
  5. Ushada
  6. Saari
Most of these villages have not been approached by any organization or NGO for rehabilitation except for some of the above mentioned villages in the Agastyamuni Block wherein Care India is carrying on the house construction activity for the villagers.
The team could establish contact in 3 villages till 31st January and other villages are being contacted.
On the other front, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, the primary agricultural guidance centre for Rudraprayag district, has been contacted through G. B. Pant University for Agricultural Technology. Scientists from this University would be guiding and assisting the agriculture related activity including training and orientation of the farmers in the district.
Efforts for opening another computer training centre were also done and the search for hiring a suitable venue was carried out in Phata village as well as Chandrapuri village. This centre will be supported by Sewa Australia.
An amount of Rs.3 Lacs has been donated to Suryatanaya Sewa Samiti, Uttarkashi for relief activity, part of Uttarakhand relief and rehabilitation project.
Survey for construction of two school buildings in two towns have been carried out in association with Vidya Bharati. Both the schools were totally washed out to the extent that the ground also was washed away. In both the places Vidya Bharati has acquired plots for the construction of the building and Sewa International will build the class room complex. Sewa UK has committed to construct the school building in one of the towns while we are searching for a donor for funding the construction of the other.
Preparation for buying a Mobile Medical van was also carried out during the fortnight and fund for buying the Medical van have been disbursed to UDAPSS. The Medical Van would be operated by newly established Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission, Dehradun and will cover quite a good number of villages which do not have primary medical facilities available. This Medical unit has been sponsored by Sewa Canada International.

Diwali visit
infant-holding-adult-fingers
Had I not been encouraged by someone as sensible as the one who encouraged me, I would never have written about how I spent my Dipawali yesterday. But then, I was assured that if I share, people will find it inspiring (instead of thinking that I am bragging about it) and some thing good will come out of it. So, here it is..
The day was just like any other day I have spent at this place. Wait, it was not like just any other day….I was feeling painfully nostalgic. Bored as usual, sending Happy Diwali messages to every one and updating “missing home badly…. Crying face ” type of statuses on facebook,I ended up watching two movies at last. It was in midst of the second movie, “ Argo” that I got the call of one of my good friends here and got invited to where I was to spend my Deepawali evening. Now what he said to me seemed to be a good idea….actually an idea better than that of roaming on roads and watching others bursting crackers.
The idea was to visit some people, some children, who are less privileged than us and to spend our Deepawali with them, sharing sweets, crackers and joys with them and making their Diwali happy too. But before that, we worshipped a goddess…an unusual one. Instead of the goddess Lakshmi ( hope she will pardon us for that..) we garlanded and prayed in front of the idol of Mother India. By “we” I mean some of my friends of my year and others from different colleges and occupations here who are the members and patrons of a NGO which in addition to being one of India’s oldest and world’s largest, faces the ire of many a “intellectuals” and the so called seculars. Well we had an intellectual among us too, who was against idol worship… Open-mouthed smile.
After that we headed to the place to where we were actually destined. Its name is Maatri Chhaya (मातृछाया)। It is an orphanage of sorts and also a  children’s home. We had with ourselves sweets and crackers. This organisation is home to children who are actually orphans, or were abandoned by their parents  for some reason or another, the street children who dwell on streets or beg on railway stations and place like those and the children who are mentally challenged and have no one to take care of them. Children up to 10/12 years of age live here and the organisation, namely Sewa Bharati, bears the expenses through the donations which people make to it.
First of all we were made to meet the toddlers. I have no words to describe my emotions which developed when I entered the dormitory. There were babies in cribs, one year, one and a half years, 6 months, 8 months……10 days,14 days old, abandoned to survive in this world on their own. They all were so cute, and so lovable that I was compelled to to think about how could one abandon them ever…!!! The moment you offer your arms  to them, they would stretch their little arms to climb in your lap.  Once in your lap, they play with you like they have known you forever. Those tiny smiles are among the most beautiful things I have seen till date. All of them were so elated…laughing, shrieking with joy, clapping and slapping ( one was actually slapping every other guy she could find). And they simply refused to climb down from our laps and to leave us. Some were abandoned by their parents….some, mostly the girl babies, were simply left on the door steps of the building by their parents. These unfortunate children would never get to know who their real parents were. It was  really difficult to leave these children of fate at the end…but then, time is a ruthless thing. From the toddlers we moved on to the older ones, to whom we could talk and fire the crackers with. But there were rules according to which it could be done only under the supervision of the authorities, and unfortunately, none of them was present at that moment.
We talked in detail about the modus operandi of the organisation…and were really impressed by it. The parent organisation’s name is Sewa Bharati and it runs on donations. The children are grown up and nurtured to be raised as good men, and takes care of their well being and education. The organisation also encourages adoption. One thing which was clearly visible  that it was not like the ordinary children homes in which the children are kept like prisoners under pressure and spend gloomy lives. Every kid out there was happy, there was a smile on almost every face. They knew that today is Diwali and it is a happy thing. Second most important thing was the hygiene of the place…it was really up to mark. The children were wearing clean clothes and were being served with good food. The manager told about us the problems they have  to face as an organisation. The street children, who don’t know  the value of education and ethics, tend to run away back to their usual life, which seems to be far more elusive than the hostel life in the Matri Chhhaya. This problem is not with those who have been raised from infancy in this very organisation. One of them, perhaps named Feroz, even refused to go back to his real parents. On being grown up, these kids are sent to the Saraswati Shishu Mandir, of which I too am a proud product, and this is enough to assure that they are given the best education, culture, traditions and ethics. Lot of them get adopted as toddlers…and those who are not, get absorbed in the society seamlessly.
So what we can do for them…?
We can visit these “differently fortunate children” and make them feel that they are not alone. People have small families of four or five or so people, we can make these children feel that whole world is their family. Later in night I got to know that some of my batchmates have been celebrating their birthdays with these children…it indeed is a noble idea and I extend to them the deepest of my respect. This is really a very noble and sensible thing to do. Yes,I was late to visit, or to take any such initiative, but better late than never. You also can visit these children and spend time with these children on normal days… the timing is from 4 to perhaps 8 in evening and 9 to 11  in morning. It would be better if we visit these children on the days of festivals so that they don’t feel being alone. Just think, despite  of having all the comforts and facilities, how alone we feel if we are not able to visit our homes on the festival…and how alone these children would feel, who have never known anything such as a home or a family. We can visit them, spend time with them, donate as much as our pockets allow and even complain about anything we think is not being done properly. We owe something to these children…lets be their brothers, sisters, parents….friends, family. After all, it has been taught to us in the oldest of our scriptures..

अयम् निजः परोवेति गणना लघुचेतसाम्।
उदार चरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्।।
It means : This is mine…that is yours, this type of thinking is possessed by those who have mean consciences, small thinking. For those who are kind hearted, whole earth is family.

Dr.Hedgewar Janmashatabdi Sewa Samiti, Chandrapur was established in 1988. The First President was Late.Shri.Madhukarrao Bhagawat. “Seva” is the prominent feature of R.S.S. The places of operation of Seva Samiti are Wardha, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, bhandara, Gondia and Nagpur Gramin. R.S.S. has always tend a helping hand to the society in all kinds of calamities and social disturbances.
To activate these tasks, Dr.Hedgewar Seva Samiti has been established from the Birth Centenary of the founder of R.S.S. Dr.Keshav Balirampant Hedgewar. Most of the people in the society are far away from basic services like education and health. Believing only government can provide all theses services, it will be self-deceiving. The present situation in Seva-Vastis (Slums) and tribal area like Gadchiroli and Chandrapur Districts, is very alarming. So Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is also trying to approach such poor and needy people and provide with basis services i.e.education and health.
Inspiring from the life of Dr.Hedgewar, Adya Sarsanghachalak of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Dr.Hedgewar Janmashatabdi Sewa Samittee have started various Sewa Karyas d(Social Projects) in 1989 i.e. birth Centenary of Dr.Hedgewar.Chandrapur and Gadchiroli are tribal districts. Underlining the education and health problems Sewa Samitee has been working systematically since 1989. Sewa Samitee has been providing accommodation and education to Vanvasi (tribal) students through Vivekanand Chhatravas at Aheri, Etapalli, Sironcha, Mulchera, Jeevati and Korchi.
Simulteneously, in sphere of health Sewa Samittee has been providing health facilities through mobile unit in remote are of Bhamaragarh, Aheri, Etapalli and Mulchera. Sewa Samitee also rushes towards epidemic prone area like diseases Malaria, Diarrhea etc

Vivekanand Hostels
To alleviate the woes of all distresses and ‘have nots’ various projects are launched. Dr.Ambedkar always uttered that Education is the milk of tigress/ whoever will have it, he will become strong and confident. So to solve the problem of education of the vanvasis, living in the remote areas, hostels have been started at taluka places such as Etapalli, Mulchera, Sironcha, Korachi, Gondpimpri and Jivati.

Children interested to learn but have to drop out due to financial inability of their parents are selected and taken to the hostels. Here they get shaped by the various activities carried out in the hostels from 5 am. till 10 pm. They get aquainted with lives of great heroes. They are given the knowledge of “Stotras” and taught “Shlokas” Also through the games they are properly trained on the play grounds. They are transformed into the well civilized persons. These finely polished gems are then ready to take over the social responsibilities on their eminent shoulders.

Children read the book and speak about it in a group. This will imbibe various qualities such as reading understanding, self interpretation and publick speaking which is now a days rare.

Keeping this in mind, Seva Samiti offers a helping hand to the weaker students to help them study better after school through free tuition class. To support this “Study Rooms” are also provided. Mobile Dispensory
Importance of health in human life is undisputed. Only a healthy body can possess a healthy mind and a sublime soul. Determining this, our traditional motto has been “Sarvepi Santu Niramaya” i.e.let All people be healthy and free from diseases. Rushis and Acharyas also pray for healthy people through the psalm. This ideal was being cultivated in our people’s mind through customs and rites.

‘Health for all’ is the motto of World Health Organisation. To fulfill this, WHO has been trying to reach all the deep-rooted people in the society through different government of all countries. Our government has been also trying for this purpose. But unfortunately, sluggishness, stifling of self initiative, dependence on the government for alleviating our miseries and perpetual wailing over the administration’s failure to come our rescue has become a part of our nature.

Mobile Medical Unit
More than five decades have passed since the advent of independence, yet tribal in this in this remote area are struggling for survive against epidemic disease and Malnutrition. Government Health Centers has been established at taluka places. But the geographical distance between places, makes tribal difficult from receiving basic services. Unawareness of diseases, hygiene, lack of communication and transportation facilities make diseases stronger than man.

The problem of tribal health and nutrition is linked with social, economic and educational status of the tribal. The tribal demographic scenario is one of high fertility, high maternal and infant mortality rates. Poverty, illiteracy malnutrition, lack of personal hygiene, unsanitary conditions and absence of health education, poor mother and child health services. Thus inaccessibility of difficult pockets in the district has kept them away from certain basic amenities like primary education and health care. So Dr.Hedgewar Janmashatabdi Sewa Samiti, Chandrapur has decided to run health Centers in Gadhiroli District through Mobile Unit. Bhamragad, Etapalli, Mulchera, Aheri and Sironcha are most remote Talukas in Gadchiroli Dist. Sewa Samiti Started its services on Birth Centenary Celebration year of Dr.Hedgewar, founder of R.S.S. in 1989. The services of Mobile Health Unit is regular till today. Many Doctors provide their services through this Mobile unit.

To reach such places Sewa Samittee has been trying to provide Health Service through Mobile Unit. Doctors and Swayamsevaks of Sewa Samittee attend village patients. Medical Van well-equipped with doctors and medicines run village to village in inaccessible pockets of this tribal area of Gadchiroli District. Weekly Medical Centres in each villages service more than 50 patients per day. Our Mobile Medical van in many places of this district have became the lone source of their treatments in few years. Pathological tests have been carried out in our pathology laboratory established at Aheri Centre and also we are trying to avail these facilities through our Medical Van.

About 65 villages are interconnected with our six weekly medical centre ensuring villagers their better health. In last few years not only we have simply transported accident victims and serious patients to hospitals but also we have taken care of treatment of persons whose family lmembers fail to reach in times. We have also been carrying out surgeries with the help of hospitals far away from this area.

Health Worker Project ( Swastha-rakshak )
Women Village Health Workers (Arogya Rakshika) are selected from the respective community by Sewa Samiti. They are trained in various aspects of malnutrition, various diseases, pre and antenatal care, behavioral communication change. They are acting as resource persons for the village and are playing a crucial role in creating awareness in the field of nutrition and Health Awareness among the tribals. Sewa samittee also provided them a first aid kit and necessary medicines. Regular Health Check up of pregnant women and new born babies in the intervention area is done under the supervision of Doctors through these health workers.

In this context, Dr.Hedgewar Janmshatabdi Sewa Samitee has been arranging the training of a woman in a village called “Swastha-rakshak”, for placing him incharge of health care of the village. They are given a pack of ten medicines and the responsibility of attending to all the patients of the village. Such Swastha-rakshaks are appointed in 10 villages. These Swastha-rakshak has been given training of awareness of T.B. and DOT (Directly Observed Treatment) and other epidemics and day to day Health issues. The patients suffer from Tuberculosis in the village are directly kept under observation of these Swastha-rakshakas and given regular three day treatment in a week for six or eight months depending upon the category of disease. Sewa Samiti have established Health worker system in one of the most remote pocket of Gadchiroli District i.e. Petha Circle of Etapalli Taluka .

Blood supply centre
What could be better than getting uncontaminated blood for the friend and family of the patient in dire need? A blood bank where with utmost care and use of latest technologies, blood is acquired, separated and stored in ideal conditions is Dr.Hedgewar Blood Bank operated by Seva Samiti. Also the distribution centre at Wardha is working efficiently under this project.

Since last 17 years Blood supply centre run by Wardha Dist. Sewa samitti is providing blood to nearly 25 hospitals as well as govt. hospital and Sawangi Meghe Medical college hospital. Yearly at least 500 patients are the beneficiaries of this blood supply centre. Blood supply centre at wardha arrange Medical Camps regularly and blood collected through theses Blood donation camps is sent to Dr.Hedgewar Blood Bank, Nagpur and as per need this blood is supplied to the patients in Wardha District.

Arogya Bharati to work for positive health in villages

Arogya Bharati, the premier organisation dedicated to the sphere of health in rural areas, has come up with a new initiative to spread positive health in rural India. “We have been working on ‘Swastha Gram Yojana’ from 7 years in a village in Gujarat. Results of our efforts in that village are very encouraging. We have demonstrated a positive impact on many health parameters. Hence we now want to replicate the experiment across number of villages in different parts of our country,” said Dr Hitesh Jani, HoD at Gujarat Ayurveda University in Jamnagar and convener of ‘Swastha Gram Yojana’.
“We have developed a 10 point programme to be followed under the ‘Swastha Gram Yojana’, which includes environmental protection, clean drinking water, developing collective thinking about the health issues in the village and promoting discussion over such issues, developing ‘Health Card’ scheme for health monitoring, cleanliness drive, de-addiction etc. We are also in process of enhancing the programme with the help of institutions and individuals who have worked in the area of rural health,” Dr. Jani added.
He said there is a vast gap between the health facilities in cities and the rural area which makes the task of rural welfare tougher. While working on the issue, we realised that the scenario can be altered by creating awareness about positive health in the rural area. If we can create an environment where people will be motivated to follow a positively healthy lifestyle and they could be provided with guidance from experts in the field of health, health conditions of an area like say a village can be altered within a stipulated time frame. Once we came to this conclusion, we started to experiment it at the Surya village in Jamnagar district of Gujarat and 7 years down the line we can easily see that this works, he said.

  • In Arogya Chetana Shivir 877 women and 1066 men from 1648 villages participated in Guwahati.
